Diabetes and self-management

About the Diabetes Diary: The Few Touch Application

The system is based on a mobile phone, and has elements for giving the user an overview of blood glucose levels, food habits, physical activities and personal goals. It is presented in a simple and user-friendly manner. Blood glucose values are automatically transferred to the mobile phone when measured. The user can also find general information about diabetes as well as some practical advice.

Improving self-management using an electronic diabetes diary

Many people with Type 2 diabetes find it difficult to follow the recommendations given concerning blood glucose levels, medicines, nutrition and physical activity.

  • Can a digital diabetes diary system make healthy lifestyle changes more achievable, and give the users better control over their disease?
  • Can health counselling, by a diabetes nurse, further improve the results?

In the Norwegian study within the RENEWING HEALTH project, we want to give approximately 100 people with Type 2 diabetes access to a digital diabetes diary, called the Few Touch Application (FTA), to investigate if this mobile tool can give users a better overview of their condition. We also want to see if it can help motivate users to become more physically active and to achieve healthy nutrition habits, which in turn might help them keep their blood glucose level more stable.

The system has previously been tried out by many groups of diabetes patients with positive results, and this randomized controlled trial will provide a deeper understanding of both clinical effects and requirements for further implementations of systems like this.

In addition, we want to measure the effect of health counselling from a diabetes nurse for half of the FTA users, for the first four months of the intervention period.

All participants will follow their ordinary treatment with their GP.

Objectives

The purpose of this project is to test the effect of a mobile-phone-based self-management tool, as well as this tool in combination with health counselling from a diabetes nurse. The main objective for the patients is to achieve better metabolic control, quality of life and empowerment by using mobile self-management tools.

For the health service the main objectives will be

  1. To see what effects these tools might have on patient treatment.
  2. To investigate cost-effectiveness and cost utility.

Empowering the patient

Successful intervention will mean that participants take reponsibility for managing their disease with their own follow-up of blood glucose measurements, food intake and physical activity.

FTA is a self-help tool aimed at empowering patients to improve self-management.
