Global problem-based learning - One way to do it

Aims The aim is to develop a new global problem-based learning model in national subjects for Norwegian medical students abroad and foreign physicians outside of EFTA. The training period will be during the two last years of the student's education, to ensure that foreign students can perform house physician services immediately after their exam.

Design The study is based on four Internet based modules:

Municipal health care services Insurance medicine Rights and duties in healthcare and psychic health care Organization and liability at law in health care The modules are distributed via Internet to student groups located all over the world. They cooperate and communicate according to problem-based models. The tasks are based on case studies and some individual proficiency tests.

The last module is a five day gathering including an individual exam and duty work in a Norwegian municipal.

Methods A demo of the net based model will be available to conference participants during the poster session.

Results The study has been finished including both content and educational design. Five student groups including altogether 34 students studying in Scotland, Ireland, England, Malta and Australia are testing the global problem-based model. The students will graduate during summer 2002 and be ready for house physician services by 15th August. The program will be evaluated and adjusted according to their experiences.

Conclusions We have succeeded in developing a new study model in national subjects based on modern educational principles. The teaching methods will be tested and the first students graduated during summer 2002.
