Joint venture between NST, Well Diagnostics and SND
The DORIS-project completed
2003.04.07
Tromsø: On Monday 7 April, we will celebrate the completion of a project in which the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine worked together with Well Diagnostics to develop new telemedicine and communication solutions for the public health service. The Norwegian Industrial and Regional Development Fund (SND) has supported the project through the OFU scheme for public sector research and development contracts. The solutions developed have promoted North Norway's position as the leading health region in electronic messaging.
The DORIS project:
Three products have been developed under the OFU contract: DORIS Communicator, DORIS Professional and DORIS Web. DORIS is a series of software solutions for secure communication, multimedia processing and telemedicine.
All hospitals and GP practices in the Health North region use the communications software, which is like an envelope in which you can place sensitive information. DORIS Communicator enables the public health service to send and receive electronic case summaries, laboratory results, radiology results and referrals within the health network.
Health North is the first health region in Norway where electronic referrals are regularly used, covering 27 GP practices and five hospitals. DORIS Communicator is also used for sending electronic prescriptions as well as reports to the Cancer Registry of Norway.
The multimedia program DORIS Professional is a referral tool in the medical areas of dermatology, ear, nose and throat conditions, heart conditions, eye conditions and radiology. The program is integrated with electronic patient record systems, and with a variety of technical medical equipment. DORIS Professional has the potential for a wide range of applications when payment schemes for digital images are established in the public health service. In the summer of 2003, Norwegian authorities will specify rates for dermatological, ear, nose and throat and X-ray images. Doctors can then obtain a digital camera, and transfer the images to the hospital electronically using the DORIS system.
Well Diagnostics has also developed DORIS Web, which is a Web-based tool for communication between specialist groups. This is used in professional electronic networks such as the Eye Network (Øyenett).
